Large Antique Chinese Calligraphy Sign Board

About the Item

A antique Chinese Qing Dynasty period "Honor Reward" calligraphy sign board. The wood carved signboard showcases Chinese characters with gold leaf on a blue lacquered background panel, encircled by a red wooden molding. Frame carved with gold leaf relief details depicting birds, foliage and lotus flowers. Fitted with two two fine characteristic Chinese metal buckleson allowing it to be hung on a wall. China 1820. Height board itself not including the buckleson 76 cm The sign was made in 1820 as a gift to a goverment officer (this kind of gifts was very common in those days equivalent to our greeting cards today, only it was made more prominent). The sign honors the officer saying he did many good things (deeds) to be promoted, and his good deeds will be remembered and celebrated. Calligraphy, meaning "beautiful writing," has been appreciated as an art form in many different cultures throughout the world, but the stature of calligraphy in Chinese culture is unmatched. In China calligraphy was considered not just a form of decorative art; rather, it was viewed as the supreme visual art form, was more valued than painting and sculpture, and ranked alongside poetry as a means of self-expression and cultivation.
