About the Item

This exquisite fossil diptych features one Diplomystus dentatus and four Cockerellites liops (formerly known as Priscacara). These fish are all Eocene era fossils dating back about 50 million years. The ancient fish are forever preserved in a sculptural matrix of fossil-bearing limestone. Each panel in the diptych measures approximately 1 foot x 2.7 feet. The overall width of the diptych will vary depending on exactly how the panels are arranged. Each panel is fully backed with wood and has a built-in French cleat, which allows for an easy installation. Details -Diptych single panel size: 12.63" H x 32.25" W x 1.25" D -Includes a Green River Fossil Company Certificate of Authenticity -Fossil content: (1) Diplomystus dentatus (measuring 13"), (4) Cockerellites liops (3.5" to 4.5") About the work Green River Fossil Company is a world leader in fossil preparation and presentation, specializing in the unique fossil treasures available from the Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA. Fifty million years ago, in southwestern Wyoming, a tropical freshwater lake teemed with life. Turtles, fish, crocodiles, and lush vegetation were all once well-established inhabitants of the region. Today, the lake has transformed into an incredibly rich cache of fossils where the past is forever preserved in layers of natural limestone. This is famously known as the Green River Formation. Professional fossil hunters scout out and excavate fossils from Green River Fossil Company's private quarry; the fossils are then brought to the GRFC lab in northern Utah. Leading experts in fossil preparation perform the painstaking task of revealing the finely preserved details of every specimen. All work adheres to the strict standards of the American Association of Applied Paleontological Science, as is attested to in each work of art's unique Certificate of Authenticity. Green River Fossil Company has supplied exquisite examples of natural art and outstanding specimens to world-class museums, universities, collectors, interior designers, and art lovers. The collection of natural history presented here highlights important one-of-a-kind specimens as well as attainable works of natural, sculptural art. In addition to the collection of unique, sculptural art presented on 1stDibs, Green River Fossil Company custom crafts incredible and unique fossil projects. From kitchens, vanities, and baths to feature walls, fireplaces, and furniture, GRFC has the ability to create nearly any custom job you and your design team can imagine.

This fossil fish mural features a large Diplomystus dentatus, three Knightia eocaena, and two Cockerellites liops in natural, fossil-bearing limestone. This mural is part of a limited series in which we are exploring the use of Kinstugi to highlight various features within our fossil stone.
