6'0" Bass and Teak Wood Surfboard in Stock
About the Item
Hand shaped bass and teak wood surfboard made by Greg Mitchell the lead designer at West of Noble. The board includes teak that was purchased from a retiring boat maker in Brooklyn, NY. It was created using a technique known as 'chambering' that harkens back to the origins of surfboard design whereby the individual boards are glued together using project glue and the blank is shaped close to its final form. Then the boards are carefully separated and each one is hollowed out-or chambered-to remove as much material as possible, thus reducing the overall weight of the piece. Finally it is reassembled with a stronger glue and sanded to it's finished form.
The surfboard was glassed at Pure Glass in Costa Mesa, and ridden a handful of times. It works well, but serves beautifully as a decorative object-a piece of functional art that is a nod to surf history.

West of Noble
West of Noble is a Los Angeles based design practice dedicated to the pursuit of making wooden furniture by hand. It was founded by designer and itinerant woodworker Greg Mitchell in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in 2011, but is inspired by a lifetime of travel, time spent on the sea, various odd jobs, wooden sailboats, and friends and family; without whom the company would not exist. Our designs are guided by the making process, and the unpredictable nature of our chosen material. We aim for the simplest line in each piece, believing it is only finished when there is nothing left to take away.
