MEASUREMENTS: Frame 30.25" H x 37.75" W x 1" D Image 20.75" H x 28.25" W André Cottavoz, born in Saint-Marcellin (Isère) on July 29 , 1922 - died July 8, 2012 in Vallauris, was a French painter and lithographer who belonged to the group known as the School of Paris. Cottavoz studied at the École des Beaux - Arts in Lyon in 1939. In 1942, Cottavoz at age 20, he was drafted into the Compulsory Labor Service (STO). The STO, earned him a deportation to Austria with his comrade Philibert Charrin. Despite trying living conditions, they managed to paint on pieces of scarp canvas and cardboard, but most of the paintings were destroyed. Released from service and his studies completed, he participated, from 1945, in several exhibitions. In 1953, he won the Fénéon prize . Meanwhile, an important movement was born: the new figuration of the school of Lyon, known as Sanzism. Jean Fusaro, André Lauran, Jacques Truphémus and Paul Philibert-Charrin join Cottavoz to express this new trend, namely the search for a less natural light coming from the very inside of the canvas. In this new trend, Cottavoz works thick with "sensual paste that accumulates in pastel and chalky tones being thus figurative in the sense that it starts from the reality, abstract in the sense that it reduces it to its essence" . This gains him the nickname of "Green Monticelli. Cottavoz settled inVallauris in 1962 and worked on glazed ceramics with Roger Collet. The works of André Cottavoz appear in many museums in France and abroad, and multiple exhibitions of his works have been organized in France and abroad from 1946. André Cottavoz was born in 1922 in Saint-Marcellin near the town of Grenoble in France. He was passionate about painting from an early age, and so his mother encouraged him to continue to pursue his love. He began his art studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France from which he graduated in 1945. At the end of World War II after a group show at Silk City in 1948 ,Cottavoz, along with Pierre Coquet who also attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, helped to found a group of painters who called themselves Noisme (or Sanzisme in French). This group was also referred to as the Lyon School of New Figuration.
