About the Item

Along the Mountains V by Alfred Lowe Unique piece Alfred Lowe is an Arrernte artist from Snake Well in the Central Desert, north of Alice Springs. He began his ceramics practice in early 2021 and now works daily at APY Studio Adelaide. His art explores themes of Country, identity, and culture, drawing inspiration from his intimate knowledge of the desert landscape. Alfred hand-builds organic vessels, applying underglazes and sgraffito techniques to create textured surfaces. His upbringing profoundly influenced his artistic journey; he was a neighbor to renowned painter Clifford Possum and spent significant time at the Araluen Arts and Cultural Precinct during his youth. These experiences fostered his deep interest in fine arts and cultural expression. In 2024, Alfred won the prestigious Shelley Simpson Ceramic Prize, awarded by Mud Australia. This recognition provided him with international exposure. Alfred's pieces are characterized by their vibrant colors and bold forms, often incorporating elements like raffia to add texture and depth. His work continues to evolve, reflecting his ongoing exploration of cultural identity and the narratives of his heritage. Through his ceramics, Alfred Lowe contributes to the broader conversation about First Nations art and its place in contemporary society.
