About the Item

Beautiful and atmospheric collage artwork by the Belgian artist Paul Dufrane. The painting is entitled 'The mirror', it is composed of various antique prints, transformed into a sparkling and atmospheric whole by the artist. The artwork is framed behind glass in a simple gold-coloured wooden frame. Paul Dufrane (Saint-Gilles, 1922–1999) was a Belgian surrealist painter, draftsman and collagist. Education at Sint-Lucas and at the Academy in Brussels under L. Devos and Anto Carte (1940-1944). Debuted non-figuratively, soon leaned towards surrealism and evolved towards figuration. His compositions sometimes breathe symbolism, sometimes poetry or eroticism. As an artist, he is a prime example of "phantasy magic". This is a pseudo-surrealist movement that developed on the edge of surrealism in Belgium in 1958 and is also known as the “fantastic” movement. In this context, his work was also discussed in 1959 and 1962 in the French-language magazine Fantasmagie. Later he was also a member of the artists' group Coll'Art, which united various collage makers. Between 1971 and 1973 they organized several exhibitions in Ostend, Brussels, Verviers and Ghent.
