About the Item

New London County, connecticut produced many excellent samplers from the middle of the 18th century through the first decades of the 19th century. Characterized by strong pictorial scenes executed in Fine needlework, these samplers are evidence of the presence of many different, talented teachers who worked in New London and nearby towns. This praiseworthy sampler is signed, “Adaline L. Young’s Sampler Aged 11 Years born June 8th 1822,” and the tight and finely worked needlework throughout is a testimony to the direction of the teacher and the talents of the maker. The sampler includes many alphabets, a Classic verse and a beautifully developed scene of a double-chimney Federal house with a dependency structure, depicted in three-quarter view. Each house features many windows and a doorway with a transom of unusual design, which lend a decidedly graphic quality. Adaline L. Young was the daughter of Charles Young of Indiana and Ardelia Bowen of Lebanon, Connecticut who were married there on August 23, 1821, according to published Connecticut Vital Records. Ardelia was from an early Rhode Island family. Archives have provided a copy of Charles Young’s will and inventory, following his death in 1864. Adaline married William Reed, who was from Stafford, Connecticut, on October 24, 1841. Sadly, she died not long afterwards at age 20 on December 24, 1842. She is buried in the Young family cemetery in Lebanon next to her parents. Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a beveled cherry frame with a maple bead. Samplers and needlework are our specialty.
