Enamel by Studio Del Campo

This beautiful platter / wall-plaque -- depicting two figures carrying foodstuffs to market, accompanied by a ravenous wolf-like creature -- was made in the early 1960s at the Del Campo atelier in Turin, Italy. It is made of copper, with figurative highlights in brilliant "grisaile d'oro" enamel. Grisaile d'oro is a rarely seen and highly labor-intensive technique, involving the hand-working of layers of gold and silver leaf, upon which the translucent enamel is melted. It is a process which yields an enamel surface with amazing (almost three-dimensional) depth and complexity and it was the specialty of the small Del Campo atelier. Del Campo was known for producing luxury goods such as this platter, often designed by famous artists like Gio Ponti, or by one of the four partners who founded the workshop: two married couples who worked side by side from the 1950s until the end of the 1970s. Signed verso "Del Campo Italy".
