Hand colored Lithograph of Life on the Hudson River

About the Item

A magical image of a bygone era; "Villa on the Hudson, near Weehawken" engraved by J.C.Bentley after a picture by W.H.Bartlett, published in American Scenery, about 1840. Steel engraved print with more recent hand colouring. Very good condition. Size 18.5 x 14 cms including title, plus margins. William Henry Bartlett was born 1809 and died in 1854. He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He first came to the United States in 1835 to draw the buildings, towns and scenery of the Northeastern United States. Bartlett’s renditions were accurate and interesting. His work is considered some of the best historic American documention ever published during the early 19th Century. The work of WH Bartlett coming from American Scenery published in 1837 in London. This is a lovely hand colored steel plate engraving. The print is 8.25"x6.25".
