About the Item

Hand-Painted Ceramic Wall Plaque by Hilkka-Liisa Ahola for Arabia, Finland, 1950s Charming oval ceramic wall plaque designed by Finnish artist Hilkka-Liisa Ahola for Arabia, Finland from the 1950s. A wonderful example of Scandinavian modernist ceramic art with a poetic and narrative touch. The plaque is handmade and hand-painted, with a subtly irregular oval form and a textured, impressed rim — a tactile detail that underscores its artisanal origin. The decoration depicts a whimsical and dreamlike scene featuring a woman with an umbrella, a bird, and stylized flowers, rendered in Ahola’s elegant, fluid line and delicate brushwork. The color palette is soft and muted, with a light yellow base complemented by shades of green, lilac, faded terracotta, blue, and soft yellow accents creating a harmonious and slightly ethereal composition characteristic of Ahola’s hand. The reverse side is glazed in turquoise blue and marked “Arabia,” “Made in Finland,” “Handmålad” (hand-painted), along with the artist’s initials HLA. In excellent vintage condition with minimal wear consistent with age. Dimensions: Width: 9.25 in (23.5 cm) Height: 7 in (17.7 cm) Depth: 1 in (2.5 cm) About Hilkka-Liisa Ahola (1920–2009): Hilkka-Liisa Ahola was a celebrated Finnish ceramic artist and designer who worked for Arabia from 1947 to 1974. Known for her poetic, hand-painted motifs and lyrical imagery, Ahola often depicted women, birds, and nature in her works, combining delicate brushwork with expressive color. Each piece was individually hand-painted, making no two exactly alike. Her ceramics are today highly collectible and admired for their quiet charm and distinctive Scandinavian modern style. About Arabia, Finland: Founded in 1873, Arabia is Finland’s most iconic ceramics manufacturer and a cornerstone of Nordic design. Throughout the 20th century, the company became known for its blend of craftsmanship, artistry, and functional modernism. Designers such as Hilkka-Liisa Ahola, Birger Kaipiainen, and Ulla Procopé helped define Arabia’s artistic reputation. Arabia pieces from the mid-century era remain prized for their timeless design and exceptional quality.
