About the Item

Herman Casagranda (1917-2011) Colorado, Medieval Castle, enamel on copper with walnut frame back. Image: 7.25" x 16", outside frame dimensions 11" x 20.5". Renowned for decorating his Frisco home in a medieval style along with a life size knight and numerous pieces of his enamel artworks. Many of his pieces share a "modern" Medieval theme and the range of his work runs from realistic to abstract and he is considered an important member of Colorado's midcentury arts community. Casagranda garnered several public art commissions and today has a large following of collectors generating several of shows of his works. His pieces can be found in enamel art web collections plus several Colorado museum collections, most notably the fine 20th century decorative art collection of Denver's Vance Kirkland Museum. A popular quote of his, "The art of enameling is of great interest to me because it affords me the opportunity to express many of my ideas or feelings towards things in this world which fascinate me. I enjoy and handle my work in a manner which best expresses my feelings. The range of my work runs from the realistic to the very abstract. Imaginative art expression pleases me. All of my work is done in the as I go along manner. I have no real definite or precise ideas in mind as to how I am going to handle or treat my subject. As I work along, things like color, forms, etc., tend to lead my way to the final statement. I never make a preliminary drawing. I work and am guided by the commands of my conscience and innermost feelings directly with the medium. This is the simples manner in which I can explain how I derive my art work."
