Italian Turn Of The Century Terra Cotta Plaque Of The Goddess Flora
About the Item
A unique and finely detailed Italian turn of the century Terra Cotta plaque of the goddess Flora. This elegant circular plaque is centered around a recessed panel of the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, Flora. Flora is depicted in a flowing robe with her hair blowing in the wind and surrounded by a stunning array of flowers and finely detailed winged cherubs singing her praises. The mythological plaque displays a raised outer band decorated with scrolled foliate designs and bouquets of flowers. All original patina throughout.
Flora (Latin: Flōra) is a Roman goddess of flowers and spring – a symbol for nature and flowers (especially the may-flower). While she was otherwise a relatively minor figure in Roman mythology, being one among several fertility goddesses, her association with the spring gave her particular importance at the coming of springtime, as did her role as goddess of youth. She was one of the fifteen deities who had their own flamen, the Floralis, one of the flamines minores. Her Greek counterpart is Chloris.
