About the Item

This is a wooden work board made from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. Specifically, this is the board used to make udon noodles and rice cakes. As a result, this board has numerous cuts. Because of the straight cuts, it was probably primarily used to cut udon noodles. In Japan, such boards are called ``men boards'' (noodles are called men in Japanese) or ``mochi boards.'' The material is zelkova wood. As it is made of hard wood, it is quite heavy, weighing 20.45 kg. It is known that this is a board used in a village called Akiyama-go, which straddles Niigata and Nagano prefectures. It seems that it was used until recent years. This area is one of the areas with the heaviest snowfall in Japan, and it is said that the people there lived a simple and simple life until the mid-20th century. During the winter, the people there spent their lives making woodwork and other items using the abundant wood available. They also made the boards they used on a daily basis. The daily necessities and tools used here were popular with collectors in Japan and sold for high prices. This time, through a special route, I was able to obtain the board that was used in Akigawa-go. It is a very cool piece that will look great when hung on the wall. It can also be used as a low table. It is in very good condition and there are no major warpages. The parts used are whitish, and the other parts are blackish due to the smoke and soot from the hearth. I believe that the beautiful design that has developed over time is comparable to modern abstract paintings. This is a highly recommended item.
