Late 19th Century Portrait on Porcelain of Jesus Christ in Original Gilt Frame
About the Item
A superb late 19th Century picture of a young Jesus Christ in its original gilt timber frame. Hand-painted on porcelain the wonderful image is signed 'Wagner' which leads us to believe it is German in origin. This particular image is taken from 'Christ in The Temple' by Heinrich Hofmann which was first painted in 1881. We can therefore date this picture to post 1881 however believe it to be painted before the turn of the century. The condition of the picture is excellent for its age and appears to be in its original untouched state, including the frame and backing material. A wonderful example of the hand painted portraits on porcelain coming our of Europe during the mid to late 19th century.

Meerschaum is known, which is used to make pipes and is found in areas such as Crimea, Bosnia, Greece, Spain, Tanzania but especially in Turkey. Meerschaum is a greasy, soft type of stone. A special property of meerschaum is its light weight. It floats in water for a while before slowly sinking. When completely soaked in water, it cuts like soap. When dry, the processing is comparable to softer woods. Finally, fire ensures that it hardens somewhat and that is precisely what is suitable for pipes to give the object sufficient strength.
