About the Item

Lava Wall Plaque with Enameled Bird by Jean Jaffeux 1960s A very beautiful decorative wall plaque in enameled lava, figuring a bird, or most likely an eagle. The graphic work on the almost cubist, even anthropomorphic lines of the bird is stunning ! The enamels have a glossy finish in two shades of brown and two shades of blue. Jean Jaffeux was a proponent of unique pieces, created in a single firing. This piece is very most probably the only one existing with this design ! A ring on the back allows it to be mounted on the wall. It is signed on the back by the artist and still bears the original label from his workshop. Perfect condition ! More about Jean Jaffeux : Jean Jaffeux (1931-2015) was a ceramist, enamel artist on lava, and painter. Son of Charles Jaffeux, a painter, illustrator, and engraver, and grandson of a painter, Jean Jaffeux was born in 1931 in Riom, Auvergne. Inspired by his father's work, he began painting self-taught at the age of 15. Naturally following in his family's footsteps, he drew advertisements and illustrations. After discovering the technique of enameled lava, he decided to apply his talent as a decorative painter to this new medium, volcanic stone, which is abundant in the Auvergne region. Subsequently, he decided to open his own artisanal workshop. For over fifty years, Jean Jaffeux worked there on the art of enameled lava for interior decoration (living room tables, wall panels, etc.) and outdoor environments. His sometimes abstract graphic style, combined with his color palette, gives his work a unique and recognizable signature. A proponent of unique pieces, he left behind a body of work that still maintains aesthetic modernity today. The painter and ceramist Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) had been interested in enameled lava since 1948. He met with Jean Jaffeux several times for tapestry projects. Lurçat even gave him several designs to work on, but there was no follow-up.
