About the Item

The Bible story of baby Moses drawn from the River Nile made with silkwork and chenille. Moses is gently taken from a basket made of reeds while his sister Miriam watches over him. The women's dresses are Victorian in style. The colors are lovely. The scene shows a tender moment in the Bible. The work is framed under glass with black eglomisé. Dimensions: 21.25" x 18" wide x1.5" deep Condition: Very good; the silkwork is in very good to excellent condition. The eglomisé is original. The golden wood frame is later. Price: $620 Background of this Victorian needlework: "The Baby Moses" became a popular theme for needlework and embroideries in the early nineteenth century. Canvaswork, in which thread is stitched through a foundation fabric, and surface embroidery, in which the majority of the thread sits on top of the fabric, exist side-by-side in the English tradition, coming in and out of fashion over the years. The Biblical story: A baby boy was born from the house of Levi of the Hebrews and was hidden for three months to avoid being slain by the Egyptians, as Pharoah has ordered the killing of every Hebrew son. When the baby could not be hidden any longer, his mother put him in a basket made of reeds and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.
