Pair of painted wooden plaques shaped like Classical columns each topped with a globe featuring symbols from the Order of Freemasons from Edwardian period England c.1910. These unusual artifacts from the Masonic Order reflect the core beliefs of the group symbolized by the shape of the Classical columns from Ancient Greece. Atop each column is a globe, with one globe crisscrossed with both latitude and longitude lines while the other globes show stars gleaming in the heavens. These globes signify order in the universe, something a Mason strives to achieve in his own life. One column features a compass spread to its full width laid over an inverted square rule. These tools from the architect trade both create something different, the compass a circle while the straight edge rule creates a square. These are the aspects of the body, square, laid with a circle representing the spirit. When seen atop one another as here it symbolizes the quest to harmonize the spiritual and physical nature of man, a goal all Freemasons pursue. On the other column there is a five pointed star in an upright position symbolizing the call to man to discover and act on his inner divinity. All Freemasons belong to a lodge that is replete with decorations chosen to remind a member of both his own and the order's goal. These two pieces were originally part of an early twentieth century lodge that has since been disbanded. They are of impressive scale and apart from their original use are quite striking on their own.
