A Pair of Painted Syrian Boards

About the Item

A pair of painted boards from Syria, known for richly decorated interiors, particularly during the Ottoman period. These are excellent examples of “Ajami” work, a traditional Syrian decorative technique using carved or painted wood panels with motifs in gesso, paint, and sometimes gold or tin leaf. While your pieces don’t seem to have metallic leaf, the painted designs and patina are very consistent with this heritage. Likely 19th century or early 20th century, though some similar pieces are earlier. They were often used in ceilings, walls, or built-in cabinetry in lavish homes or reception rooms. Authentic Syrian painted wood panels are increasingly rare due to conflict and cultural loss in the region. They have a curved shape.
