Pair of Reliefs, Grotesque or Candelieri, Wood, 16th Century

About the Item

Pair of reliefs; grutescos or candelieri. Carved, polychrome and golden wood. 16th century, and later Pair of reliefs made of hand carved wood, gilded and polychrome, showing a winged angel head (or putti) each, located on a vertical element that serves as the axis of symmetry for the composition of the relief. The rest of the motifs that complete the works are sheets with scrolls, floral or vegetable details, lacerias, moldings, all of clear classical influence. The background does not present any decorative element, neither carved nor painted, leaving the prominence to the mentioned elements. These types of compositions were very common in the Renaissance throughout Europe, as the “fashion” of the grutescos spread from Italy. Compare, for example, with the frieze reflected in an image of Diego de Sagredo's work entitled "Measures of the Roman" (1526, Toledo); details of the Chapel of Santa Librada of the Cathedral of Sigüenza by Francisco de Baeza (circa 1520); others from the façade of the Major Schools of the University of Salamanca; Altarpiece of the Collegiate Church of Torrijos (Toledo), commissioned in 1558 by Juan Correa de Vivar; etc. It should be noted that these decorative motifs will have a long tradition in Spanish Art. It is quite possible that the present relief plaque was created to be part of an altar in a church even if it is not decorated with a religious theme (note that the theme of "winged heads", often called "putti", also proceeds of Italy and is in both civil and religious works)." Tabernacle Door, Wood, Metal, 16th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
This type of elements are basic in churches, chapels, etc. since they contain the Sacred Forms, reason why it is logical the abundance, with a series of typologies more habitual and traditional or old than others. There are also iconographies more common than others, a certain thematic preference according to the date or school to which the work belongs, etc., always related to the Sacrifice of Christ, Salvation, Transubstantiation, Eucharist, etc. for being a key element for Christianity (especially the Catholic) what they will always contain. The present work shows a chalice with Sacred Form in what would originally be the interior of the door (very usual iconography) and a somewhat more striking relief to the exterior. Inside that it is a Eucharistic Christ or Eucharistic Savior, the way of presenting it is more usual of the scenes of the Last Supper, being not so frequent to find it alone like this. Compare for example with works such as the door of the tabernacle attributed to Alonso Cano...
