About the Item

Pieter Plas(Alkmaar 1810-1853) came from a well-known family of artists from Alkmaar. His father and first teacher was the carriage and landscape painter Louwerencius Plas (1776-1847). The painter himself was also a coach painter until he was 24 years old. After two years of study in Hilversum with Willem Bodeman and the animal painter Jan van Ravenswaay, he specialized in painting landscapes with cattle. The flat North Holland landscape was often his source of inspiration. Pieter Plas had several pupils and was director of the drawing society 'Kunst zij ons doel' in Alkmaar. The 'u' is in fact an open 'a'. The 'g' is a long 's'. The 'a' with a cup is used less often in the Netherlands than the 'a' with a belly. If you don't close it properly at the top, it looks like a 'u'. Puddle signed with a long 's' at the end of its name.

Here innovative artists who the official salons did not appreciate were given a forum. The members of “L’Effort” opposed academism. 19th Century Dutch Sheep Painting in Carved Gilt Frame Signed Frans Lebret
By Frans Lebret 1
Located in Dallas, TX
Set in the original carved gilt wood frame, this antique oil on canvas was crafted in Europe circa 1860. Signed in the lower right corner by Dutch artist, Frans Lebret, the charming pastoral painting captures a serene interior barn scene filled with rustic warmth and intimate detail. At the center, a group of sheep reclines peacefully on a bed of straw, joined by a rooster and a hen, all softly illuminated by daylight streaming in through an open doorway. To the left, a woman and child stand quietly near a wooden support beam, their presence suggesting a gentle guardianship over the animals. The structure of the barn its beams, rafters, and shadowed recesses are rendered with atmospheric depth, evoking a sense of shelter and tranquility. Outside the barn, a glimpse of tiled rooftops and blue sky connects the calm interior to the rural world beyond. The painting is presented in a lavishly ornate gilded frame, carved with baroque scrolls and acanthus leaves, which enhances its timeless, bucolic character. This work is a tender tribute to the harmony between humans, animals, and agrarian life. The art work is in excellent condition with great details and beautiful pastel colors; it is set in a splendid and elegant gold leaf frame with floral and leaf motifs in high relief. Artist listed in the Benezit. The canvas has been relined. Frans Lebret (1820-1909) was born in Dordrecht and was known for his Dutch landscapes mainly with sheep. Thanks to financial help from his brother Gerrit who had a sugar estate in Java, and his job as a drawing teacher, Frans was able to survive his first years as a painter. Later he became quite successful and was able to live of the sale of his landscape paintings with animals. In 1863, together with his brother Jan Hendrik...
