Punta Secca , n. 88/90 Serie Città Frontale misurements: 70x100 in a white lacquered wood frame not coeval. Pietro Consagra (1920-2005) Italian sculptor and writer, he was one of the most prestigious exponents of Italian abstract art. Born in Mazara del Vallo on 6 October 1920, after completing his studies at the Palermo Academy, he moved to Rome in 1944, where he joined abstract art by participating in the Forma 1 group (1947), which claimed «the freedom to be at a time Marxists and formalists», i.e. abstractionists. Here he worked in Mazzacurati's studio and in Guttuso's, where he met Piero Dorazio, Ugo Attardi, Carla Accardi, Perilli, Guerrini, Turcato and Sanfilippo. It was precisely together with these artists that Consagra prepared in March 1947 the manifesto of the abstractionist group "Forma 1", in which the lesson of abstractionism was theorized, learned thanks to a trip to Paris organized by the communist youth. This is how the artist summarized his personal poetics: «To express the dramatic rhythm of today's life with plastic elements that should be the formal synthesis of man's actions in contact with the gears of this society, where will, strength, optimism are needed , simplicity, clarity». Starting from a research on materials, he later created almost two-dimensional sculptural reliefs (for example Piccolo colloquio romano, 1957, in bronze), in which he tends to cancel the thickness until reaching the thin plates of the large frontal City, an urban proposal polemically utopian to which he also dedicated the pamphlet of the same name (1969) and which led him to insert the monumental constructions of the Meeting in Gibellina and the arch on the motorway into real space. In 1978 he was one of the promoters of an important document on the preservation of historic centers which took the name of the Matera Charter. The Municipality, for his merits, awarded him honorary citizenship. In 1981, for the reconstruction of Gibellina nel Belice, he created a large star, 24 meters high, in stainless steel: the Porta del Belice. Among his last great works, in 1998, he made a marble sculpture, dedicated to Janus, more than five meters high, located in Largo Santa Susanna in Rome. Awarded the gold medal as Meritorious of Culture and Art by the president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, as well as a sculptor, Consagra was a writer and critic, collaborator of many art publications, wrote The need for sculpture (1952), The frontal city and Vita mia (1980), an autobiographical work, and was a prominent personality in the cultural world of a historical period of decisive importance for Italian art, in the forties, which saw the birth of abstract art. Pietro Consagra died on 16 July 2005 in Milan, the city where he had settled for ten years, at the age of 85, and was buried by his express will in the Gibellina cemetery.
