About the Item

Red, white, and black Art Deco styled art featuring stylized fish and geometric shapes. Handmade by Pollaro artisans utilizing traditional Asian eggshell inlay and lacquer techniques. Inspired by the work of Art Deco master Jean Dunand. Bright red background and detail rendered in glossy lacquer. Eggshell inlay requires skill, meditative attention, and an eye for detail as every eggshell is delicately crushed into tiny pieces and placed by hand. In Paris in 1912, Japanese lacquer artist Seizo Sugawara crossed paths with accomplished metal smith Jean Dunand and exchanged shop secrets. The result was a creative explosion that made Dunand one of the foremost artists of the Art Deco period, with his particular specialty the production of eggshell lacquer, an ancient Asian technique traditionally used for small-scale objects. Regrettably, because of its labor intensity, the art of traditional eggshell and lacquer finishes all but disappeared in the 1940s. Pollaro has revived this artistic technique. This piece is available immediately as shown; custom pieces may also be commissioned.
