Architectural elements, grotesques, medallions, lettering, crests, mythical creatures, angels and ornamental motifs in gold and silver metallics and polychrome. Plate LXIII by Bauer Plate LIV by Durin Plate LVIII by Kraatz and Durin Plate LII by Bauer Note: The original edition of L'Ornement Polychrome featured gold and silver metallic inks as in this set of chromolithographs. Later editions lack the gold and silver metallics, making the originals highly prized by collectors. Provenance: Collection of Frederick Hemme References: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 1995.318.1 for Plate XXVII in this series; New York Public Library, NYPL catalog ID (B-number): b13939370; Getty Museum, Object Number 84.XB.317.1 ALBERT-CHARLES-AUGUSTE RACINET The first edition of Racinet's highly influential L'Ornement Polychrome was published by Firmin-Didot, 1869-1873. Along with Owen Jones's The Grammar of Ornament, it remains one of the most important works on the history of ornament to influence architects, designers and decorators who look to the past to see the future. The work featured luxurious gold and silver metallic inks and provided a visual record of the decorative arts from antiquity to the 18th Century in architecture, metalwork, textiles, painting, woodworking and porcelain masterpieces. The huge success of the first edition led to a second, produced in 1885-1887, also by Firmin-Didot. Subsequent printings followed such as an english version published by Henry Sotheran and Co., though the quality of the originals is unmatched as it was carried out by some of the best commercial artists of the day and are considered fine works of art in their own right. Height: 16.13 inches Width: 11.25 inches The last photograph is for display purposes, showing a framed piece from the Moyen series.
