About the Item
This extraordinary pair of sculptural relief panels, depicting elaborately costumed figures in highly decorated settings, is clearly drawn from Aztec and Mayan art and architecture. The panels were probably sculpted by Jacques Schnier, whose earliest work for the Golden Gate Exposition in 1938 constituted his best work, in our opinion. The Aztec-Mayan theme represented an important strain in American modern design in the 1920s and 1930, and can be found in a number of public buildings such as the Aztec theater in San Antonio and the original lobby of the Fisher Building in Detroit.
