About the Item

This intresting piece is a Key board in shape of three monkeys Creator: Herta Baller (Maker*in),Walter Bosse (Designer*in) At the end of the 1940s, he developed brass miniatures in the shape of animals. Bosse's love of animals is expressed in these works. Bosse made a lot of decorative figures and utility objects from animals or decorated with them. The models were based on models from zoological gardens as elephants, monkeys, bears and hares. Style: Mid-Century Modern (From the period) Materials and methods: Brass, partly polished Place of origin: Austria Period: 1950-1959 Year of manufacture: 1950 The three monkeys symbolize the values “see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil”. They stand for the teaching that you yourself determine what you perceive and how you behave. Origin The meaning of the three monkeys is said to go back to a proverb from the writings of Confucius. The first performance with the monkeys took place in 1636 at the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. The three monkeys have their origins in a Japanese proverb and stand for dealing with bad things. Meaning in East and West In Japan, the three monkeys have the meaning of “wisely overlooking bad things”. In the western world, they tend to be interpreted as “not wanting to accept everything that is bad”. The monkeys are called Mizaru, Kikazaru and Iwazaru and cover their eyes, ears and mouths
