About the Item

This fantastic set of French panels are decorated with hunting and fishing trophy motifs, all in the Louis XVI style. Two of the panels feature game birds tied from a crinkled ribbon motif with incredibly detailed leaves, stems, and bunches of berries flowing from top to bottom. The third panel depicts a long hare, two large fish, and branches of leaves with berries. All panels have curved inverted triangular moldings which frame bunches of fruit, and leaves, each different than the next. These panels were originally used as overdoor decorations in a paneled room, likely a French country Chateau, dating to the middle to late 1800s. They are carved from a softwood, in wonderfully detailed relief. Notice how each leaf curves and undulates to reflect the light. The two panels with the birds, although similar, have slight variations in the positioning of the birds, as well as the size, shape, and placement of the branches, trailing ribbons, and leaves. Every flat surface has been decorated with thousands of tiny circular impressions adding texture and character. These were done by a very skilled wood carver. Today, this rare set of 3 panels can once again be used as overdoors, but they can also be hung anywhere in the home as a piece of sculptural art. Each panel is framed, fitted with hanging wires, and has been given a French wax finish. The coloration and patina of these panels is rich and warm.

Wear consistent with age and use. Good antique condition with some old fills, nicks, and repairs. The plaque with the rabbit and fish is slightly shorter, measuring 39 1/8 inches high. Wire is affixed to the back of each for hanging.
