About the Item

STERLING SILVER MATCH SAFE GADGET CANE David A. Bowles, London Circa late 20th century 35 7/8" H x 2 1/2" W (handle) An unusual and functional gadget cane in the form of a finely modeled sterling silver gloved hand, the back of which opens with a hinge to operate as a match safe. The lid is struck with 925 purity and fully hallmarked on the upper glove for the London silversmith David A. Bowles. The hand rests over a white collar above a slender tapering ebony shaft terminating in a ferrule. The handle shows crisp detailing from the articulated knuckles and thumb to the cuff of the glove, with the hinged panel nearly invisible when closed. Condition: Sterling has been left with its patina intact and polish remnants in the crevices - we can polish this to perfection upon request. Minor scuffing along the shaft, overall with a fine surface. Ferrule worn and stained. ref. 503EBX05 About silla antiques & art Established in 2009, we have available in our 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery an ever-changing selection of carefully curated and catalogued furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture and estate jewelry.
