Museum quality craftmanship from the 1800s. One of the things that ignited our interest in antiques was the detailed manner in which many antiques are created. In our years of selling antiques since, we don't remember ever selling a wall plaque with details as good and as many as in this remarkable work of art from the late 1800s. This is the kind of quality that you normally only find in a museum of Fine Arts. We don't think we will ever find a more detailed and realistic antique plaque with such depth and beauty. Looking at and enjoying the beauty of this antique is one thing, realizing that whomever created this piece had to first carve this entire scene out of wood, a hardstone or perhaps out of clay gives you an even better idea of the incredible workmanship and the time it must have taken to create this gem. The artist simply created the perfect composition and if you look at the details in the fishing nets, in the fish and in some of the other water creatures (especially in the alligator getting ashore) then you might also realize that it has taken a master carver a great many hours to create this museum quality antique. Have you also noticed the quality of the hands and feet of the amazing goddess, that too is a sign of the level of the artisan's craftsmanship. Besides the staggering details this gilt plaque also has the perfect patina making it look even more ancient and impressive. This intricate plaque is both classical and Art Nouveau in style and that makes us think this is a 'Belle Epoque' era work of art. With a tine hole in the top center and some minor bendings on the sides (this cast copper plaque is relatively soft) this piece is not in perfect condition. However, with a rare piece of this quality and beauty we don't see that as a problem at all. In the bottom right corner are the words 'depose' and 'geschutzt' which is French and German for 'trademark'. Above that is a word that we cannot read, but it looks like a word in an Eastern European language and that might hold the answer to the origin of this stunning work of art. No matter where you decide to have her on display, this goddess and her sea creautures will never fail to impress you or anyone visiting. Finally, this amazing antique looks so much better in real life than in any of our photos, you can, again, take our word for it.
