Mid-Century Modern Decorative Plate by Hungarian artist Gorka Livia (1925-2011). This plate like all of her ceramics is hand thrown and has a freeform feel due the uneven shape of the vessel which is almost oblong. The color is mustard yellow decorated with two large stylized fish in black. Pisces? In the image of the back, it looks like dirty spots but is actually where the glaze was thinly applied and the clay color shows through. It was made to hang and a wire loop was incorporated unto the back. The plate dates from the 1960s. Elegant and rich Mid Century Modern Copper Enamel Platter by Harold Tishler from the 1950s. The vivid copper background shines through the very dark gray enameling fading into a very light gray outer edge. The edges are folded in to create a softer feel. Two small drilled holes are on the bottom edge, probably needed during firing. Signed on the bottom center H. Tishler. Condition: Very Good. There are two small holes on either side of rim that were intentionally done, maybe for firing. Some rubbed spot on bottom by signature. Please look at all images and view our other H. Measurements: 13 3/4 inches diameter x 2 1/4 inches high Harold Tishler (1893, Odessa – 1993, Florida) Studied engineering in 1910 at University of Grenoble but did not finished his studies and moved to New York 1913. During WWI, he joined the Merchant Marines and while visiting Japan was introduced to the art of Cloisonne enameling. In 1927, Tishler went to Vienna to study under Josef Hoffmann. Upon his return to NYC in 1932, he began producing copper and silver enamels that were sold at high-end stores. In 1935, Tishler visited a fellow student from the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, Edward Winter in Cleveland. Tishler was impressed by Winter’s enameling...

Extraordinary modernist item by Swedish Tilgmans Keramik. Fully glazed centerpiece or wall decoration depicting a green faced woman with long stemmed yellow and blue flowers on a striped dark blue background created with the sgraffito technique. Manufactured in 1957 by German/Swedish Paul Harald Tilgman in his workshop in a small town close to Gothenburg in Sweden. Blue patterned glaze on the sides and muted blue leaves on the milky white glazed base. Signed and dated on base. A rare and unique piece in beautiful condition! Sweden, 1957. About Tilgmans Keramik: Paul Harald “Harry” Tilgmann was born in Dresden, Germany in 1904 and emigrated to Sweden during WWII where he started Tilgmans Keramik (= Ceramics) in 1948 in the small town of Utbynäs close to Gothenburg. Tilgman had 16 employees working for him and when he hired the Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki (1912-1978) as artistic director in 1953, Tilgman Keramik started experimenting with the distinct sgraffito technique. The sgraffito technique consists of carving fine lines into the background of a design through a light coloured glaze down to a dark grey clay slip. This created a unique textured ground which has become a style associated with Tilgmans Keramik in particular. The decorative elements also appear to be outlined with a carved line and then hand painted with overglazes where birds, fish, flowers, butterflies and other animals were a common theme.
