About the Item

Willem Witsen 'Amsterdam, Binnenkant met Sneeuw' Hand Signed Etching, The Netherlands, 1903. This is a very interesting hand signed etching by renowned Dutch artist Willem Witsen with a remarkable provenance. Wonderful work, highly detailed and very well made. Every part shows a complete universe of details on its own, from the houses in the background to the people walking in the distance. Very atmospheric and moody. Depicting a snowy Amsterdam canal called ‘Binnenkant’ and was made presumably in or around 1903. A similar etching can be found in the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Very interesting provenance: comes from a private family collection - purchased originally by the famous electric lighting and electronics tycoon Anton Philips and his wife Anna de Jongh. About Willem Witsen: Willem Witsen (1860–1923) was a Dutch painter, photographer, and etcher associated with the Amsterdam Impressionists. His work often depicted atmospheric cityscapes, particularly of Amsterdam, Dordrecht, and London, capturing misty canals and quiet urban scenes with a subdued, melancholic tone. Witsen was also a key figure in Dutch artistic circles, fostering connections between painters, writers, and poets. His home in Amsterdam became a gathering place for artists of the Tachtigers movement, who sought to blend literature and visual art with a focus on personal expression. Aside from painting, Witsen was an accomplished photographer, documenting his artistic surroundings and peers. His meticulous etchings and tonal paintings demonstrate a keen eye for composition and light. Hand signed W. Witsen at lower right. Professionally framed.
