Wrought Iron Antique Keys, Locks and Ironwork, 15th-19th Century

About the Item

Collection consisting of more than 40 keys of different sizes, to which are added several ironworks and two ancient padlocks, all made in wrought iron, with some pieces retaining their original patina. It is essential to highlight the great variety and different chronology of the elements that make up this set. The ironwork located in the centre, ornamented with scallops at the corners and sides, is Gothic and of the type used in desks better known as "bargueños". There are several keys that, by the shape of their ring, can be dated in the Baroque (those in whose ring there is inscribed a circle or tear in the opposite part to the bit, which ends in the extension of the seatpost). The simplest ring (big key) usually correspond to the 19th century, more focused on the purpose utility of the object without stopping to give them a mere decorative touch as it is done in the previous examples. Although it is usually not possible to distinguish which type of door or furniture they would open, those that present crosses (one Latin and Greek or crossbars equal the other) clearly denote their realization for use in religious settings. The triangular, old padlock is an example of a long tradition form in the Iberian Peninsula with some preserved samples from both the Gothic and the 17th century (Museo de Teruel). The other recalls by its shape the first combination that already exist in the 19th century, characterized by its cylindrical shape and the rings that decorate it. Note that several of the pieces that make up the collection still retain the original patina with which these objects were covered to protect them from the oxidation and deterioration that the use and the passage of time caused in the metal. · Size: 66 x 83 x 3 cms.
