"Young Greeks Attending a Cock Fight", Superb Limoges Enamel of Gérôme Painting
About the Item
Although KPM, the German porcelain firm, is well known for its glazed plaques that copied great European masterwork paintings, Limoges in France did the same, though in enamel, an art form much more difficult to master. Limoges produced museum-quality enamels for centuries, and this magnificent example, by Alexandre Marty, was made in the 1920s. The scene is an extremely fine rendition of Jean-Léon Gérôme's 1846 painting of two young nude Greek youth observing a pair of roosters in the midst of their battle, sometimes titled "Cock Fight." The Gérôme painting was purchased by the famed art dealer, Adolphe Goupil, from the original buyer, and later the painting wended its way from the Musée du Luxembourg to the Louvre, and ultimately to the Musée d'Orsay. Marty is famed for his enameled vases, but plaques like this are much more rare in his oeuvre, and the colors of this example have a deep, jewel-like quality. The enamel is signed and gorgeously framed in a richly-grained walnut frame; the reverse is affixed with a photograph and biography on the Marty family.
