Created in the renowned tapestry-making city of Aubusson, France circa 1760, the work is hand-painted in gouache on paper and presented under glass within a carved giltwood frame. The composition features a charming Rococo-style courting scene enclosed within an oval medallion, flanked by a garland of delicate flowers and foliage in soft pink, green, blue, and ivory hues.
Tapestry cartoons such as this served as full-scale models from which weavers created the famed Aubusson textiles. Executed in oil or gouache, these preparatory paintings guided the placement of wool and silk threads, determining color and shading with remarkable precision.
