After Jacopo Tintoretto, miracle of the slave, 1840s Alternative title "The Meiracle of St. Mark". Original is from 1548. Oil on canvas. Mounted on wooden plate, easily removable. Can be hung like a tapestry and weighted down with a brass rod. Good original condition. Provenance: A manor house in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. Biography: Jacopo Robusti, called Jacopo Tintoretto (born September 29, 1518 in Venice; died May 31, 1594), was an Italian painter. Today he is assigned to Mannerism, which he himself influenced considerably. His name "Il Tintoretto" ("the Little Dyer") is derived from his father's craft. The speed with which he painted and the unprecedented boldness of his brushstrokes were admired and criticized by his contemporaries. He was called "Il Furioso" ("the wild") for his phenomenal energy in painting. His work is characterized by its muscular figures, dramatic gestures and the bold use of perspective. Although Tintoretto began his apprenticeship with Titian around 1533 (around 1488/1490 - 1576), the two men were so different and Tintoretto stubborn that no classical teacher-student relationship came about. The young painter Andrea Schiavone (born circa 1510-1515 - died 1563), some years younger than Tintoretto, was much in his company. Tintoretto helped Schiavone free of charge with mural paintings; here and in many later cases he also worked free of charge and was thus able to obtain commissions. The two artists were connected by a productive friendship. Tintoretto's first work to cause a stir was a group of portraits of him and his brother. Tintoretto painted three of his main works for the church of the Madonna dell'Orto, the Adoration of the Golden Calf, the Depiction of the Virgin in the Temple and the Last Judgement, circa 1546. He settled in a house by the church. In 1548 he was commissioned with four paintings for the Scuola di San Marco: the discovery of the body of St. Mark, the salvaging of the body, St. Mark saving a Saracen from shipwreck and the miracle of the slave (all three are in the gallery of the Accademia Venice). The latter represents the legend of a Christian slave who was to be tortured as punishment for some acts of devotion to the evangelist, but saved by the miraculous intervention of the latter, who shattered the bone-breaking and blinding tools that were about to be applied. Between 1565 and 1588, Tintoretto produced a large number of paintings for the walls and ceilings of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The coronation of Tintoretto's life and the last painting of considerable importance he executed was Paradise (from about 1578) in the format 22.6 x 9.1 meters, considered the largest painting ever painted on canvas. Tintoretto remained active as a painter until the end of his life and died in Venice in 1594. The artwork: The Miracle of St. Mark (1548) is currently in the Gallery dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy, and was originally commissioned for the Scuola di San Marco, a brotherhood in the city. It shows an episode from the life of Saint Mark, patron saint of Venice, from the Golden Legend (Latin: Legenda Aurea) of Jacobus da Varagine. The upper part of the scene shows the saint intervening to make a slave invulnerable, who is to be martyred for worshipping the relics of another saint. All the figures are integrated into an architectural frame. The picture shows different influences on Tintoretto's art: While the anatomy is Michelangelo-like, the lively and intense colours are typical of the Venetian school.
