AskArt bio:
Coming to Santa Fe from Brooklyn in 1985, he was taken with the light and the colors of the Southwest landscape. He loves to paint sky, adobe structures, and trees. He also travels throughout the country giving workshops.
His heritage is Russian Jewish and Polish. In 1916, his father emigrated from the Ukraine to New York where he met his Polish wife. Trained in New York City and Paris, Albert attended the Art Students League for three and a half years, and his most influential teacher was Frank Mason. He discovered his great love was painting outdoors, especially old woods and streams in the Catskill Mountains.
A 1980 trip to Santa Fe was life-changing, and he moved there in the mid-80s, trading the subject matter of dark woods for brilliant colored landscape. In style, he followed in the footsteps of artists he most admired--Edouard Vuillard and Joaquin Sorolla.
His studio is a renovated two-car garage, and he works in both pastel and oil, winning awards in both mediums. Handell was one of the first plein-air artists to work with a full set of pastels on location. He works "en plein air" with pastels and does oil painting in his studio.
In 1987 Handell was named to the Pastel Society of America's Hall of Fame and in 2000 he earned the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
