Antique Raffaello Hand Colored Lithograph Etching in Gilt Frame

About the Item

Impressive Italian hand-colored classic motif print depicting lions, birds, griffins, swans, ruins, putti and strongmen. Raffaello Sanzio d'Urbino, also known as Raphael, designed the decorative elements of the Loggia di Raffaello in the Vatican. The Loggia is an open-sided vaulted gallery where these designs were painted. Giovanni Volpato, a skilled engraver, and Giovanni Ottaviani, another artist, produced a series of engravings based on Raphael's designs, which were published as "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano". This collection of prints became influential in shaping Neoclassical taste and popularized the "grotesque" style. Raphael designed the decorative elements within the Loggia, which included arches, vaults, pilasters, and doorways. These designs were frescoed onto the walls and ceiling. Giovanni Volpato and Giovanni Ottaviani, both engravers, were given the task of reproducing Raphael's designs in a series of engravings. The engravings were compiled into a book titled "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano", which documented the ornamental decorations of the Loggia in detail This narrow artwork has been professionally framed in a gold leaf wood frame and would wonderful on a narrow wall needing a statement piece.
