About the Item
P. E. Millet
(France, early 20th century)
TIGER
Executed 1937
Charcoal and gouache on paper, 64 x 93 cm
Signed and dated lower left: P. E. MILLET 37
Athletically well-trained, muscular and with a broad chest, Millet's tiger confronts us in this large-format drawing. He is meant to impress, and he succeeds. Millet drew his virile alpha male in 1937, and the few other signed works (also tigers) that are known of him were also created in the 1930s.
Stylistically, the tiger belongs to the Art Deco predator pictures of the 1920s/30s and is reminiscent of Paul Jouve’s and Jean Royer's sleek panthers.
Although he clearly signed his name, we know next to nothing about P. E. Millet, not even his first name. He is one of the great unknowns of art history and has not yet made it into any encyclopaedia of artists. It can be assumed that he mainly worked as an illustrator and interior decorator.
It is easy to imagine the tiger in a cool, elegant and exquisite Art Deco setting. There may also have been an oil version, which could have been painted on a gold ground or on lacquer in keeping with the taste of the time.
The depiction can easily compete with drawings by Paul Jouve, but is available at a much more favourable price. A very attractive and highly decorative work!

P. E. Millet
(Frankreich, Anfang 20. Jahrhundert)
TIGER
