Costume for a Ballerine Dancer by Natalia Gontcharova, Watercolor and Pencil

About

Study of a costume for a ballet dancer by Natalia Gontcharova (1881-1962). Watercolor and pencil on light brown cardboard. Numerous annotations in French in pencil detailing materials and colors to be used e.g. "---le corsage bleu clair assez appuyé, les grandes feuilles d'un autre bleu et autres matières, les tiges et les bordures des grandes feuilles, argent très clair---". Signed top left corner. Dimensions: Frame: 56.5 x 40cm Drawing: 47 x 31cm There is no indication of the ballet this costume design was made for however N. Gontcharova contributed only to one ballet with a water/sea/marine theme called "Sadko" by the Ballets Russes around 1916 so it is highly likely that this costume design was made for one of the roles in "Sadko" which was inspired by an old Russian popular legend. Origin: Solange Schwartz collection; she was the first dancer to receive the prestigious title of "Danseuse Etoile" (Principal Dancer) at the Paris Opera. The drawing is sold with a certificate from Mr Dimitri Joannidès, expert in modern and contemporary art. Natalia Gontcharova: She was one of the leading Avant Garde artist in Russia part of the Futurist movement then a founding member of the Rayonist movement in Saint Petersburg. In 1915 Natalia Gontcharova and her husband Mikhael Larionov (a famous avant-garde Russian artist as well) were invited in Paris by Serge Diaghilev to participate to the design of costumes for the "Ballets Russes" (Russian Ballet). This invitation started a new period in Gontcharova and Larionov lives leading to her French naturalization and installation in France.
