Drawing, 18th Century English School, Portrait of William III
About the Item
The drawing at hand relates to an allegorical portrait of William III (1650-1702) painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller in 1701. The portrait, which was probably commissioned by William himself, shows the King as peacemaker, returning from negotiations that led to the signing of the Peace of Ryswick on September 20, 1697, that settled the Nine Years War. He is surrounded by allegorical figures, while Astraea, the personification of Justice, floats above. The original painting was commissioned for the wall of the Presence Chamber at Hampton Court Palace, where it still hangs. This is a faithful and talented contemporary rendition thereof.
