Fine Sanguine and Black Chalk Portrait of a Chinese Sage Wearing a Mala

About the Item

Ivan Alexandrovich Gerassimoff, 1885-1954, was active in the 30s in Shanghai and Harbin, moving to Tashkent after WWII. His style was strongly influenced by Alexander Yakovlev, a noted Russian painter and graphic artist widely admired for his portrait drawings. Both artists depicted Oriental subjects such as the present drawing in sanguine and black chalk of a Chinese sage in contemplative pose, wearing a mala. Signed Gerassimoff and dated 1948. Original frame and hand colored matting, original backing slightly distressed. Overall dimensions: 23 inches by 29 inches, sight- 14.88 inches by 20.44 inches.
