About the Item

A rare opportunity to own an early tryptic drawing by the Superhumanism artist, Jane Anderson (born 1952 London), which was originally produced whilst at Art School and later sold through the Treadwell Gallery, London, 1970. This unique work is signed "Jane Anderson 1970" and is mounted in its original aluminium frame which carries the Nicholas Treadwell label to the back. In untouched, original condition with the only issues of note being some staining around the picture mount and age related marks and scratches to the frame. Jane Anderson studied at both Ealing and the Slade School of Art (MA). At Ealing she was taught by, encouraged and inspired by Celestino Valenti (a master of the craft) and later became an important protagonist of the Superhumanism movement. Jane was represented by the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery from 1972 to 1990. Anderson's work has often focused on the body as a site of self-expression, and her pieces have explored themes of gender, sexuality, feminism and identity. Her work has been exhibited in many of the gallery's shows and projects and published in numerous books dealing with the Superhumanism movement. Jane's output was small, with no more than four drawings being produced per year and at the 1972 Düsseldorf Art Fair, Nicholas Treadwell sold several of her “Boots” drawings to the Italian Establishment art historian and gallerist, Arturo Schwarz, and The Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris were amongst many international buyers of her work. Nicholas Treadwell is a British art dealer, curator, and founder of the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery. Established in 1963, Treadwell started with the "The Mobile Galleries" (A double decker bus and several furniture removal vans) with the aim of taking art to the people and later, from 1968, opened the iconic Chiltern Street Gallery in London, where this piece would have originally been sold. Treadwell is particularly well-known for his pioneering work in the field of Superhumanism, a British art movement that he helped to foster. Superhumanism is an art movement that focuses on the creative potential of the human body. It draws on various influences, including the avant-garde, the body-art movement, and performance art. Super Humanism encourages artists to explore their own identity and to express themselves in ways that are often unconventional.
