About the Item

Marcel Duchamp (born 1887 died 1968) was one of three artistic brothers, his brothers working as Raymond Duchamp-Villion and Jacques Villion. All three working in the modern art style and all three have works represented in most major museums and collections world wide. Marcel started out working in the Fauvist style but soon graduated on to the other current movements of the time. He was intrigued and committed to the cubist movement for a time. The collaborative efforts of Braque and Picasso had produced a radical new way of seeing the world. Duchamp's attentions turned to seeing movement and the space around that movement breaking up the planes of an image. The former artists were trying to alter the picture plain and the images with in the plain creating a new third image blending into itself. Duchamp's efforts here in the represented work clearly shows his goals with cubism. A common everyday object a coffee grinder has been reduced to its basic mechanical planes and then the motion within the machine has been emphasized with direct linear slash marks. The image taken from a drawing also of the same year makes one object into a moving form turned into art confined within a mechanized picture plane. As a gift for the wedding of his brother Raymond Duchamp-Villion ,Duchamp produced a painting of this image with more detail and compositional form which now forms part of the Tates collection in London. Another work on a similar theme is "Chocolate Grinder" of 1913. Again this gauche painting is the common object turned into movement and form but this time a little bit menacing for its somber tones, painterly techniques and almost sexual machine rendering. All of this work culminates in two versions of his most famous painting "Nude Descending a Staircase". The first version painted for submission to the 1912 Salon des Indepentes. This painting, rejected by the cubist as a radical departure from there desired ideas, caused much interest and talk in Paris and helped to further interest the public in the many divergent art movements and political manifestos of the time. The second version of the painting from 1913 was exhibited in Manhattan in the infamous Armory show of that same year. This painting, considered one of the most important works of the twentieth century, now has pride of place in the Arensberg collect and is on permanent view in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This painting and the artist were singled out at this show as a cause celb for the old and new guard in the art circles of the world. Extensively discussed in every major newspaper and magazine of the time and its impact on art and collective thought made Duchamp a house hold name of the time. His star in Paris was rising and his then transfer to DADA and then the Surrealist movement cemented his artistic legacy. As a surrealist he worked in painting and sculpture, wrote articles for surrealist publications and collaborated with other high-ranking artist to put on exhibits for the publics benefit such as Dali , Man Ray ,Max Ernst and may others. He created again much controversy over his Art AntiArt motivations and became famous for his surrealist objects such has his "Optical Machine". This panel of glass required the viewer to stare at it for one hour with one eye closed. Another famous work in this vein was his "Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors Even" a work which is also now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art which took him many years to produce and which he typically did not declare finished until it was accidentally broken in transportation .He was also noted and acclaimed for his Ready-Mades or "anything that comes to hand turned to art". Duchamp also published a number of books, took up photography and even played professional chess. This etching is museum matted and is in a fine vintage french carved wood frame. The work presented here is, though small, a seminal work helping one of the giants of modern art work out theories that would lay the foundation for all modern and contemporary works that come after it's practice
