Original "Cutaway" Drawing of the Lotus 30 Racing Car by Brian Hatton

$5,500

About

Brian Hatton's painstaking cutaway drawings won him acclaim as one of Britain's great technical artists. This meticulously detailed pen and ink drawing (on illustration board) of the beautiful but ill-fated Lotus 30 sports racing car is the original artwork that accompanied an article published in the British car magazine, The Motor, on January 22, 1964 after the Lotus 30 was announced at the 1964 London Motor Show. This drawing was also published in a two-page spread in the April 1964 issue of Road & Track magazine (see image 5). This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original, well-published cutaway drawing of a Lotus racing car by one of the art's finest exponents. The 1964 Lotus 30 itself has an interesting genesis. In the early 1960s, the huge Ford corporation wanted to buy Ferrari. At the last moment, Ferrari pulled out of the deal, which so angered Henry Ford II that he vowed to defeat Ferrari on the track with a Ford racing car. Colin Chapman of Lotus, which had already collaborated successfully with Ford, expected to be brought in on the project, but the job to design the eventually legendary Ford GT40 went instead to Lotus-competitor Lola. This so angered Colin Chapman that he vowed to defeat Ford on the track with a Ford V8-powered Lotus. The type 30, with its 4.7 lire 289 V8 was that car. Though a sleek and outrageously low-slung machine, the 30 was not successful in competition, even in the hands of brilliant drivers like Jim Clark. Note regarding condition: As this was a drawing for publication, there are several handwritten notes written at the periphery of the surface of the artwork (visible in the images). These are the editor's layout instructions, contemporary with the artwork, and do not detract from the aesthetic or historical appeal of the piece, which is in very good condition. Provenance: Temple Press, Ltd. (I bought this drawing, along with several others, at a sale in London in the 1990s, when the archives of Britain's two oldest automobile magazines, The Autocar and The Motor, were auctioned by Bonham's.) Literature: The Motor, January 22, 1964 issue, p. 42; Road & Track, April, 1964 issue, pp. 44 - 45.
