About the Item

This is a work titled "Patriarch" by Martin Zipin. The title, his signature and the number 20 of 50 are written on the bottom in pencil. to striking image of a Jewish person. The face is actually similar to his own, and perhaps reflects his father. The image is in excellent condition. It is 21" high by 16" wide, and is framed and matted under glass. The entire size of the frame is 28" high by 22" wide. Martin Zipin (1920 - 1991). He painted in a wide range of forms and created his own painting style, which he dubbed "the positive image." He also painted objects, often on a textured surface like burlap, and then cut out the images to achieve a three-dimensional effect. As a young man, Zipin studied art at Temple University's Tyler School. While there, he became involved in theater, not only designing sets but also acting and singing in lead roles. He completed bachelors' degrees in fine arts and education and a master of fine arts degree from Temple. Zipin went on to create his own painting style, which he dubbed "the positive image." He painted objects, often on a textured surface like burlap, and then cut out the images to achieve a three-dimensional effect. The viewer can get quite close to one of his paintings before seeing that it is not three-dimensional. Another very effective use of the positive image style can be seen in the in Zipin's painting of a steep city street, depicting the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. This cutout oil painting is long and narrow, and perfectly captures the vertical quality that the neighborhood is known for. Zipin also did hundreds of portraits and many self-portraits. He had many one-man shows, received a number of awards from local art institutions, and sold his work to museums, galleries and colleges around the country. A painter and photographer, he taught for more than forty years. He was an adult painting instructor at the Baum School of Art, Allentown, for more than 20 years, retiring in 1976. "Martin Zipin was one of our most outstanding and gifted teachers at the school," said Dr. Rudy S. Ackerman, executive director of the Baum school. "He was one of the master teachers," in the tradition of Dr. Walter E. Baum, the school's founder. Zipin served on the faculty of Harcum Junior College, Bryn Mawr, for more than 38 years where he was a former chairman of the art department. During the summers, Zipin was a director for 13 years and an art instructor at the Long Beach Island Foundation of Arts and Sciences. He attended Temple University's Tyler School of Art from 1937 to 1942, where he received bachelor's degrees in fine arts and education, and a master's in fine arts. He was a Fellow of the school.
