Portrait of an African American Woman by Tony Sisti. Sisti was a master draftsman. With just a few lines he captures the moment. Sisti was a professional boxer and an accomplished artist. In a vintage modernist frame. Drawing measues 17" x 12" without the frame. A long-time painter and teacher in Buffalo, New York, Anthony "Tony" Sisti was also a muralist and drawing specialist. As a WPA* artist during the Depression, he did murals in western New York including one at the Rivera Restaurant in Buffalo, New York. The mural, whose subject was male laborers, was 100 feet long and 9 feet high. Often he chose boxing subjects, something he knew first hand because he was Bantam Weight Champion for the state of New York. From 1932 to 1938, Sisti was a teacher of painting and anatomy at the Buffalo Art Institute*, and then he taught at the New York School of Applied Design for Women* in New York City. Sisti was born in Greenwich Village and studied in Buffalo at the Albright Art School* with Urquhart Wilcox. After that he attended the Florence Academy of Art* Florence, Italy from 1925 to 1931, and there earned a doctor's degree with Felice Carena. He also studied anatomy at St. Mary's Hospital in Florence. Memberships included the Buffalo Society of Art, and he exhibited his work with the Salons of America*, the Museum of Modern Art and the Albright Knox Art Gallery. # sporting art sports wpa

    Fashionably dressed African American mother and child by Peggy Dodds (1900-1987). Large oil on canvas. Circa 1940's. Unframed. Peggy Dodds lived in a home in the 1940's in Paterson, New Jersey and used a neighbors detached garage as a studio. The neighbors six children frequently played in the yard and near the garage. They remember the studio being full of mannequins, wild hats and strange still lives. The girls were the subjects of many paintings by the artist. She studied at the Collegiate University, Paterson, New Jersey, Art Students League in New York; studied under Kuniyoshi and H. Mattson. She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, New Jersey Watercolor Club, Modern Art Society of New Jersey, Woodstock Art Association, American Artists Professional League.     Painting of a beautiful Venetian woman by Felice Castegnaro. Watercolor. Well framed in carved gilt and ebonized frame. Late 19th Century. Presented by Joseph Dasta Antiques. Castegnaro was born in Montebello Vicentino on 17 May 1872, he began his studies at the Olympic Academy of Vicenza and then settled in Venice where, under the guidance of Ettore Tito, he attended the Academy of Venice. He preferred the painting of lagoon subjects, but he also painted landscapes, portraits and figure paintings. His paintings narrate scenes of everyday life with an impressionist vein. He participated in numerous official events such as the Venice Biennials, Milan, Rome etc. He loved to portray the natural lights of the landscape using a very bright chromatic range and quick and safe brushstrokes.     Josef Presser (1907-1967) pastel and charcoal Portrait of a Woman on paper. Circa 1950. Presser uses an expressive hand and renders a 3/4 a striking 3/4 close up portrait. The approximate site dimensions are 9.5" wide x 13" high. Signed lower right. The framing treatment consists of a silver leaf wood molding, matted and the piece is under glass. Good overall condition. The piece has not been viewed out of the frame. The work is in good condition with no visible rips, tears or restorations. There is some light staining and foxing on the matte and doesn't look to affect the work on paper. The frame has some light wear to the silver leaf. Re-framing is suggested.
