About the Item

This original, signed drawing by John Held, Jr. -- whose artistry helped to define the Jazz Age and enliven the pages of America's most sophisticated magazines -- depicts a tuxedoed gentleman feeding a chocolate to a blindfolded flapper, all with the stylization and economy of line you would expect from Held's best work. The artist has been called "the F. Scott Fitzgerald of American art," and indeed Fitzgerald commissioned Held to illustrate the covers of some of his books. Held also designed sets for Broadway and wrote comic strips for the newspapers, but he is best known for sophisticated illustrations for some of the finest magazines of the day, including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, and Life. This drawing is ink on card stock.

"Triton and Nymph, " Art Deco Drawing by Lincoln Kirstein Associate, 1928
By William Littlefield
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine and bold drawing by William Littlefield, this piece depicts male and female nude figures in an embrace, the male figure inspired by Nicholas Podiapolski, Littlefield's model and lover in the late 1920s. Littlefield is known for his male nudes and mythological scenes, either in ink wash as here, or in oil on canvas. This drawing was completed in St. Tropez, during an extended stay in Europe that gave him a close acquaintance with Italian and other classical art. Two years later, Littlefield formed a friendship with Lincoln Kirstein...
