About the Item
Beautifully and evocatively executed, this 1922 pen and ink drawing of a satyr figure watching over a child Pan playing his pipes and drawing a deer to the scene, was created by one of America's greatest illustrators in the years between World Wars I and II -- Dorothy Lathrop. This image accompanied a poem beginning "They Told me Pan Was Dead," one of a series of fantasy verses written by Walter de la Mare for his book, "Down-Adown-Derry", published in 1923. The poem begins with this stanza:
They told me Pan was dead, but I
Oft marvelled who it was that sang
Down the green valleys languidly
Where the grey elder-thickets hang.
Lathrop became famous for her illustrations for fantasy books and children's books, and in fact she won the inaugural Caldecott Medal, awarded for the year's "most distinguished American picture book for children" in 1938. This drawing is ink on paper, is signed with Lathrop's monogram, and retains an original inscription of the poem's opening line on the reverse, in the artist's hand. Dimensions include the matte; the visible drawing is 4.25 inches high by 5.25 inches wide.
