"Self Portrait" by Charles L'Eplattenier, Art Nouveau Painter and Architect

About the Item

A veritable Renaissance Man in his day, Charles L'Eplattenier was a leading proponent of a form of Art Nouveau in Switzerland that became known as "style sapin" or "pine style." He was a well-known painter, designer and architect, and both taught and become friends with Le Corbusier. Because his home town, La Chaux-de-Fonds, became a wealthy center for Swiss watch production, the town's leaders had the means to retain L'Eplattenier to design monuments and buildings such as the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fond. This beautifully rendered self portrait dates from L'Eplattenier's days as a young but accomplished artist, and its delicacy of line does justice to a handsome, clear-eyed man. The medium is pencil on paper, highlighted with chalk. (Dimensions include frame.)
