About

This strong drawing was executed by Joe Waano Gano, an important Native American artist with a prestigious career in California in the 1930s and 1940s. Boldly drawn with pencil on a square of tracing paper, it has a strong outline and bold shadows that suggest the art and cinema of the era. Born a Cherokee Indian (his name means "Bow-Arrow"), the artist studied with Christian von Schneideau in the 1920s before exhibiting widely in the 1930s and 1940s. Waano-Gano won a series of medals and prizes, painted murals in the Los Angeles General Hospital, and promoted the native art of the American Indian. This drawing is initialed and has the artist's estate stamp.
