"Tennis Player in Canary Yellow, " Striking Art Deco Portrait of Blond Athlete

About the Item

This striking portrait of a sophisticated, beautifully groomed young man holding a tennis racket, his straw-colored hair beautifully echoed and emphasized by his canary-yellow shirt, his cheeks ruddy from the sun and his eyelids heavy from the heat of the day, was drawn in pastel by Marianne Clouzot in the late 1920s or early 1930s when she was a young artist. Clouzot was somewhat of a prodigy, drawing and painting when she was only 10, later studying at the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and under the tutelage of André Lhote. She worked in fashion as well as art and designed fabrics for the couturier Jacques Heim. In our opinion, this is her finest work -- the way she captures the hauteur of her subject, and the brilliant colors she brings to his clothing and the leafy background, is remarkable. (Dimensions include frame; visible drawing is 25 inches high by 19 inches wide.)

The artist was known for his Surrealist works in the late 19th century, and was associated with the mystical, religiously-saturated Salons de Rose...

    By Aiden Lassell Ripley

In this remarkable drawing, famed muralist Lassell Ripley depicts primitive man, warming himself by the fire with little to wear, looking into the distance toward the bright, white Art Deco spires of modern civilization. The contrast of early mankind with the advances of 1930s America is inspiring and beautiful, and Ripley clearly draw this to prepare for a mural project, probably unexecuted. Ripley is best known for his sportsman paintings, highly collectible today, but early in his career he became known for his murals, including several depicting the life of Paul Revere for the post office in Lexington...
